DAPORIJO, 25 Jun: Thousands of residents from all walks of life took to the streets here on Thursday against the proposed installation of smart meters in households across Upper Subansiri district.
The protest march, organised by the public of Upper Subansiri under the banner of the Daporijo Town Anti-Smart Meter Forum, witnessed overwhelming participation of citizens, community leaders, youths, women, and senior citizens.
The march was taken out from New Market to Gandhi Market, before culminating at Singhik Hall. During the march, the protesters raised slogans and displayed placards and banners opposing the installation of smart meters, expressing concern over their implementation and potential impact on consumers.
The forum submitted a memorandum, highlighting various grievances related to the proposed smart meter installation. The memorandum also demanded immediate action against the executive engineer of the Power Department for allegedly hurting the sentiments of the public.
Deputy Commissioner Tasso Gambo, who met the agitators at Singhik Hall, stated that the district administration would act strictly in accordance with directives issued by higher authorities. He clarified that no action would be taken outside the established administrative norms and procedures.
The protest concluded peacefully, with the forum reiterating its demand for the government to reconsider the smart meter installation process and address the concerns raised by the people.
The forum served five days’ ultimatum to address the issue, adding that it would otherwise launch a democratic movement.
