TAWANG, 27 May:  Tawang deputy commissioner Namgyal Angmo urged all stakeholders to make coordinated efforts to curb drug trafficking in the district.

Speaking at a district-level NCORD committee meeting here on Wednesday, the DC urged the public to act as the ‘eyes and ears’ of the administration and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. She stressed the importance of intelligence gathering from all possible sources.

Noting that the district continues to maintain a relatively low crime rate, the DC cautioned against complacency and underscored the need for continued efforts toward child protection and prevention of drug abuse in society.

Tawang SP Tasi Darang highlighted the growing threat posed by narcotics and warned that “drug abuse is destroying our society like cancer.”

He briefed the members on recent enforcement actions carried out by Tawang police, including arrests and seizure of suspected heroin.

He further informed about the coordinated efforts of Tawang police, SSB Lungla, and local villagers in destroying wild cannabis plantations in different parts of the district.

The SP said that Tawang police has initiated the deployment of traffic personnel as tourist police to assist visitors to Tawang, along with the activation of a dedicated police post for tourists.

Assistant commissioner Sange Norbu, Tawang PS OC Inspector N. Angu, along with representatives from the taxi union, hoteliers’ association, market welfare committee, and various departments shared their views during the discussion.

Earlier in the day, the deputy commissioner also held a review meeting with deputy director of Census Operations Phiralin Passah and statistical investigator Saksham Kohli, who are on an official visit to Tawang to monitor and review the ongoing house listing operations under Census 2027.  (DIPRO)
