The death toll from the 26 August flash floods has surged to 1,127 in Nepal and 16 in Tibet, while more than 4900 people remain missing.

Hundreds of workers are believed to be trapped at atleast nine hydropower project sites in the flood-affected areas.

The disaster, believed to have been triggered by the collapse or avalanche of ice and rock near the Nepal-Tibet border, has claimed hundreds of lives and wiped out villages and vital infrastructure.

The Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi said that more than 300 Indians and persons of Indian origin remain unaccounted for in Nepal and Tibet.

As search operations continue on both sides of the border, despite the threat of unpredictable conditions, it appears that it will take days to complete the rescue and search operations, given the severity of the devastation.

Nepal and Tibet will need years of rehabilitation to rebuild, recover and heal.
