The Delhi Police has been entrusted with the power of preventive detention under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) until 18 October.

The response to the document becoming public has been swift, with citizens questioning the timing of its release, even as the Delhi Police stated that the order is a standard administrative exercise renewed every three months.

The document being made public at this time appears to be a step by the police to intimidate citizens, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), and opposition leaders who have been out on the streets in the face of what they describe as deadly police violence against them.

As the protests refuse to die down, such intimidating tactics will only embolden citizens to speak out further against the government. The CJP began its protest at Jantar Mantar on 20 June against the NEET paper leak and to demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. However, it has now grown into a nationwide movement against the government itself.
