YINGKIONG, 2 Sep: Upper Siang district joined the rest of the state in celebrating Solung Festival 2026, with festivities being held at various locations across the district, including Yingkiong, Tuting, Mariyang and Jegging.
At Yingkiong, the Central Solung Festival 2026 is being celebrated with traditional fervour and enthusiasm at the Yingkiong Solung Ground, bringing together people from across the community to celebrate and showcase the rich cultural heritage, traditions and indigenous identity of the Adi community.
Extending festival greetings to the Adi community on the auspicious occasion of Solung, Upper Siang deputy commissioner Talo Jerang emphasised the importance of preserving the traditional essence and authenticity of the festival. He said that Solung is an integral part of the identity of the Adi community and represents its rich cultural heritage and traditions that have been carried forward since time immemorial.
He stressed that the responsibility of preserving and promoting these traditions rests with the present generation so that the cultural legacy of the Adi community can be passed on to future generations in its true spirit.
Retired district animal husbandry & veterinary officer Emo Lego also highlighted the significance of Solung as an important symbol of the identity of the Adi people and called upon the community, particularly the younger generation, to preserve and carry forward its rich cultural traditions.
Various other dignitaries and guests also extended their greetings and shared their views on the occasion.
President of the Central Solung Festival Celebration Committee, Nanong Nangkar highlighted the significance of Solung in preserving the cultural heritage, traditions and collective identity of the Adi community.
The main celebration on September 1 featured the traditional Solung Prabhat Pheri, followed by flag hoisting and the singing of the Solung anthem.
The festival commenced on August 27 with a series of cultural and literary competitions and is scheduled to conclude on September 4.
The week-long celebrations feature a wide range of cultural, literary and recreational activities, including cultural dance competitions, literary competitions, Miss Solung, community feast, tug-of-war, kids' fashion show, local cuisine exhibition and food stalls, Solung Ponung, a football tournament and musical nights.
Among the dignitaries present at the celebration were former Upper Siang district unit Women Welfare Society president Tamak Kalpana Perme Sitek, Gette village Head Gaon Burah Kebo Jiji, and Upper Siang district Gaon Burah Association president Akkong Libang. (DIPRO)
