ITANAGAR, 28 Oct: The Arunachal Christian Forum (ACF) has appealed to the state government to initiate peaceful dialogue among stakeholders over the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP).

In a representation addressed to Chief Minister Pema Khandu, the ACF urged the state government to take timely and constructive initiatives to address apprehensions, reduce misunderstandings and prevent further escalation of tensions surrounding the project.

The forum acknowledged that the SUMP issue involves significant concerns relating to development, indigenous rights, agricultural livelihoods and the future of communities in the Siang region.

"These concerns require a sensitive, transparent and consultative approach that respects the voices and aspirations of affected communities," it said.

The ACF has offered to facilitate and mediate preliminary peace talks between the state government and the Siang Indigenous Farmers Forum (SIFF), subject to the willingness and consent of both parties.

Clarifying its position, the forum stated that its initiative was neither for nor against the SUMP project.

"Its proposed role would be strictly limited to facilitating communication, promoting mutual understanding, building confidence and creating a peaceful platform for dialogue," the forum said.

It further stated that all substantive decisions concerning the project should remain with the competent authorities and concerned stakeholders through appropriate legal and democratic processes.

The ACF has expressed its willingness to consult both sides and work towards arranging an initial meeting at a mutually convenient time and venue if the government accepts its proposal.

It has also urged the chief minister to nominate an appropriate government representative to coordinate with the ACF and representatives of SIFF to explore a mutually acceptable framework for dialogue.

The forum said that open communication, mutual respect and a willingness to listen to one another could help preserve social harmony, strengthen public confidence and protect the unity and brotherhood of the people.

"Peace must precede progress, dialogue must replace confrontation and mutual understanding must guide the resolution of public concerns," the representation stated, highlighting the importance of patience, trust, dignity and peaceful engagement.

The ACF expressed hope that the state leadership would give favourable consideration to its appeal and take an early initiative towards peace and reconciliation in the Siang region.

The forum reiterated its readiness to extend cooperation in the larger interest of peace, unity and harmony in Arunachal Pradesh.
