TEZU, 8 Jun: Twelve selected interns are participating in a solid waste management internship programme which got underway here in Lohit district on Sunday.

The initiative aims to provide young students with practical exposure to scientific solid waste management, waste segregation, recycling processes, community awareness campaigns, and sustainable urban sanitation practices.

The programme also seeks to build local capacity while encouraging youth participation in environmental stewardship and civic responsibility.

The internship programme is expected to equip the participants with hands-on experience in waste collection systems, material recovery operations, public outreach, data collection, and innovative waste reduction strategies.

Speaking at the launch event, Lohit SP Thupten Jampa emphasised the importance of engaging young people in addressing the growing challenges of waste management and environmental conservation.

The programme aligns with the district administration’s ongoing efforts to transform Tezu into a model town for effective solid waste management. The material recovery facility in Tezu has been outsourced to Feedback FoundationCharitable Trust on a PPP mode for a tenure of three years.

The interns will work closely with officials, technical experts from Feedback Foundation Charitable Trust, sanitation workers, and community stakeholders to obtain comprehensive understanding of the solid waste management ecosystem. The programme will also include field visits, training sessions, awareness campaigns, and project-based learning opportunities.

Addressing the interns, the UD EE highlighted the Solid Waste Management Rules 2026, and user fees.

Through this internship programme, the participants will become ambassadors for environmental sustainability, and contribute meaningfully to creating a cleaner and greener Tezu. (DIPRO)
