DIRANG, 17 Jun: The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Dirang in West Kameng district in collaboration with the department of agriculture organized an awareness programme under the Khet Bachao Abhiyan at Phadam and Ankaling villages to encourage sustainable farming practices and strengthen soil health management.
The month-long campaign aims to promote soil conservation, balanced use of fertilizers, natural farming, green and organic manure demonstrations, sustainable agriculture, and farmer awareness across the district, the KVK said in a release.
At Phadam village, subject matter specialist Dr. T.S Mishra highlighted the significance of the campaign, while Pem Thinley, also a subject matter specialist, elaborated on the importance of intercropping with legumes for biological nitrogen fixation to improve soil health.
Thinley also emphasized the incorporation of green manure crops to maintain soil fertility and the balanced use of fertilizers for sustainable crop production.
48 farmers attended the programme.
At Ankaling village, subject matter specialist Dorjee Yodon Thungon encouraged farmers to adopt eco-friendly and soil-friendly agricultural practices that contribute to sustainable crop production and environmental conservation.
The awareness programme focused on integrated nutrient management, responsible pesticide use, improvement of soil health, and conservation-oriented agricultural practices.
“Experts explained that sustainable farming approaches improve soil structure, enhance nutrient availability, reduce environmental pollution, and ensure long-term agricultural productivity,” the release said.
The KVK said the participants, including farmers and agricultural stakeholders, pledged to spread awareness on soil health management and responsible agricultural input use among fellow farmers for the benefit of future generations.
