TAWANG, 29 Jun: A district-level speech competition in the Monpa dialect on the theme ‘Waste Management’ was conducted on Monday at the Government Upper Primary School in PWD Colony here.
Organised by the Department of Education under the guidance of the Tawang Deputy CommissionerNamgyal Angmo, the competition aimed to promote the use of the Monpa language while creating awareness on the importance of waste management through the local dialect.
A total of 12 students, comprising winners and runners-up from the six blocks of Tawang district, participated in the competition. The young speakers displayed remarkable confidence, eloquence, and a deep understanding of environmental conservation while expressing themselves in their mother tongue.
The programme was attended by DDSE Hridar Phuntsok, Kyidphel Assistant Commissioner Sange Norbu, Block Education Officers Dondup and Thutan Wangchu, senior monk of Tawang monastery Lama Thupten Tsering, former teacher of Tawang monastery Geshe Thupten Gendun, teachers, and participating students.
Addressing the gathering, the deputy commissioner emphasised the importance of preserving the Monpa language and adopting responsible waste management practices to protect the natural beauty and sanctity of Tawang. She encouraged students and teachers to use the Monpa dialect in their daily conversations, adding that learning Bhoti along with other languages broadens knowledge and creates greater opportunities.
Assistant Commissioner Sange Norbu and senior monk Thupten Tsering also stressed the importance of speaking the Monpa language in everyday life, and highlighted the collective responsibility of safeguarding the environment through proper waste management practices.
The competition concluded with the announcement of the winners. Tashi Yangzom of Government Secondary School, Bomba, secured the first position. Gom Yuton of Government Higher Secondary School, Jang, won the second position, while Rinchin Choizom of KGBV, Lungla, secured the third position.
The event reaffirmed the district administration’s commitment to preserving the rich linguistic and cultural heritage of the Monpa community while fostering environmental consciousness among the younger generation. (DIPRO)
