YUPIA, 24 Aug: Rajya Sabha member Tai Tagak said that the special intensive revision (SIR) exercise should remain non-political and free from political interference, and should be conducted solely in the interest of preparing a genuine and credible electoral roll.
Addressing a meeting held to review the ongoing SIR exercise in Papum Pare district here on Monday, Tagak emphasised the need for accurate and authentic data and proper verification of electoral entries, including ineligible entries, in accordance with the law.
He said that the integrity of the electoral roll is important for safeguarding the democratic process and national interest.
MLA Nabam Vivek said that the hard work put in by the entire election machinery should culminate in a comprehensive, accurate and error-free electoral roll.
Electoral roll observer for SIR in Papum Pare district, Vivek HP, after reviewing the exercise in the district, emphasised the importance of transparency and public trust in the electoral process.
"SIR is distinct from routine special summary revision, involving extensive door-to-door verification by booth level officers (BLOs) and booth level agents (BLAs) to ensure that no eligible voter is left out and that the electoral roll remains accurate and credible," Vivek, who is also the health and family welfare secretary, said.
Stating that the intensive exercise also aims to identify and remove ineligible entries in accordance with electoral laws and procedures, he urged all BLOs and BLAs to actively participate in the claims and objections hearing process to ensure timely redressal of discrepancies and avoid complications at later stages.
Earlier, Deputy Commissioner Mamu Hage made a comprehensive presentation on the progress and operational aspects of SIR 2026 in the district.
She informed that 11 new polling stations have been added this year to strengthen electoral accessibility and infrastructure.
The DC further said that the disposal of claims and objections will continue until 18 September, and urged members of the public having any claims, objections or grievances regarding the electoral roll to approach the respective electoral registration officers (EROs) for redressal within the stipulated period. The final electoral roll is scheduled to be published on 22 September.
Itanagar Assembly constituency ERO Dani Rikang presented a brief on the activities undertaken so far under SIR 2026, including training programmes, pre-inauguration activities, public outreach, tabletop simulation exercises, establishment of special booths and the public grievance redressal mechanism.
The meeting was attended by the EROs of Itanagar, Doimukh and Sagalee Assembly constituencies, representatives of political parties, ZPMs, and officials of the Election Department. (DIPRO)
