YUPIA, 17 Jun: The women and child development department, Papum Pare, felicitated the girl toppers of classes 10 and 12 of the district under the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ (BBBP) scheme at a function held at the DC’s conference hall here on Wednesday.
The students felicitated were Yangam Maying (Class 10, GHSS, Doimukh), Bamang Yamu, Class 12 (Humanities), GHSS, Kimin, Nangram Lily Class 12 (Science), GHSS, Doimukh and Nabam Pumin Class 12 (Commerce),GHSS, Sagalee.
Cash prizes of Rs.10,000 each, along with certificates, were awarded to the students as encouragement.
Addressing the gathering, Papum Pare deputy commissioner Lobsang Tsering said that education should not merely be used for accumulating degrees, but should help in enhancing aptitude, skills, and the overall personality development of students.
“Students should be equipped with both academic knowledge and life skills so that they become truly educated individuals in the real sense, and not merely literate,” the DC said.
While underscoring the importance of reading habits, Tsering encouraged students to cultivate reading as a lifelong habit for personal growth and awareness. He also advised the students to keep themselves updated about happenings around the world and current affairs by reading newspapers and books regularly.
Speaking about the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ scheme, the DC said that it is one of the biggest social campaigns launched by the government of India, primarily aimed at addressing issues such as female infanticide and the lack of encouragement for the education of girl children in certain parts of the country.
He added that although Arunachal Pradesh has comparatively fewer cases of female infanticide, and daughters are generally treated equally with sons in society, certain social issues, such as polygamy, still continue to affect the lives and welfare of girl children.
Superintendent of police Taru Gusar said qualities such as consistency, perseverance, and focus are essential for achieving success in today’s highly competitive world.
Encouraging the students to remain dedicated and focused towards their goals, he advised them to work hard and bring pride not only to their parents but also to the state as a whole.
Deputy director of school education T.T Tara said that the award was special as it exclusively recognised girl students and served as a source of encouragement for other girls to perform better academically.
He said that in the recent years, girls have been outperforming boys in various competitive examinations across the country. “Such achievements are the result of the collective efforts of parents, teachers, and the students themselves,” the DDSE said.
Congratulating the parents, teachers, and students behind the success, he advised the toppers to continue excelling and work even harder in the future.
Earlier, deputy director of women and child development Jaya Taba dwelt at length on the objectives and significance of the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ scheme.
She informed that under the scheme, toppers of classes 10 and 12 are felicitated every year with certificates and cash awards in recognition of their academic excellence.
She stated that the initiative has been instituted primarily to encourage and motivate girl children to strive for greater achievements in life and pursue their goals with confidence and determination. (DIPRO)
