RUKSIN, 17 Jul: MLA Ninong Ering on Friday inspected the Depi river course diversion work undertaken to control soil erosion, and urged the villagers to monitor the work.
The MLA provided some funds for the work following requests from the villagers as the river is seriously eroding its left bank.
The local villagers of Depi-Moli have engaged an earthmover for the work.
Stating that the Water Resource Department is making all-out efforts to implement schemes to control soil erosion caused by the river, the MLA urged gaon buras and panchayat members to monitor the diversion work.
The erosion caused by the river is posing threat to human habitations, including the Depi-Moli Lower Primary School, a church, and community graveyard.
In 2020, the river flow was diverted towards its right side by excavating the riverbed, but the course gradually moved towards its left side, thereby creating serious erosion yet again.
On the other hand, strong currents of the river eroded a portion of the left abutment of the RCC bridge at the Depi-Deren confluence.
Surging water of the Depi river, which triggered flash floods during the last week of June this year, washed away standing crops in the downstream areas bordering Gali Sikari panchayat in Assam.
